A Note From Dad

A Weekend of Firsts

  • I originally wrote this little note back in December, 2015. I found it hiding in the “drafts” folder this week, so out it comes…to be shared where it should’ve been shared nine and half years ago. Man, in many ways that seems like a lifetime ago…so far in the past…and in so many other ways on many other days, it feels like just yesterday. Time really is a thief as the days are long, but the years are short.

It was a good weekend. One day when you find this, I just want you to know and remember I cherish moments like these. The memories of these moments really do lift and carry me through the day. I love you both more than you know, and I love spending time with you.

It was fun teaching you both more about firearm safety and letting you get some range time in at grandpa’s place. You both seemed to enjoy that. I know I did.

It wasn’t your first KC Chiefs football game, by any means, but it was your first one in the frigid, cold rain. This is football in Kansas City. Many of my fondest memories are experiences where conditions were — less than ideal. 🙂 It does remind me of your first Chiefs game…when you were ready to leave halfway through the first quarter. After a three-hour drive to get there, sitting in line for an hour to get through the gate and parked, then spending a couple hours tailgating, I was (at first) a little miffed at the thought of leaving so early.

Then we got out to the parking lot as the second quarter started, and I realized you didn’t want to leave to go home. Instead, what you really wanted was to tailgate more. So we turned up the radio and listened to a mix of the game being called on the radio and the crowd noise as we tossed the football and warmed up the grill for another round.

Probs Definitely, the best game I ever watched. (note – as of 2025, three Super Bowl wins later, it may not be the best game I watched with you both, but it’s top three for sure. Sharing those playoff games with you both in 2020 as they made the run for the championship were pretty special.)

What better way to finish the chilly day than some more food and our first trip to Crown Center and the Crayola Cafe. I was having too much fun exploring and building memories with you to remember to take pictures. A rare occasion when I was living in the moment, “being where my feet were.”

Maybe one day soon, we’ll make it back to ice skate.

Yeah, it was a great weekend of firsts. Hope you both had a blast and will cherish memories like these.

Love,
Dad
